Nick Barley profiles five of this country's hottest talents in the run up to the Edinburgh International Fashion Festival.
Joey D
Designer of unique bags and outfits
'To be honest, I really can't pinpoint any single great fashion designer's influence on my work,' Joey D told The List in 2004. 'The people that have left their mark on me have been the people in the factories who do the graft.' It's a sentiment that epitomises Edinburgh based Joey D's approach to design, which locates itself somewhere between punk, bondage, glam and eco-warrior. His oeuvre includes bags (above) made out of old camouflage netting; suits made from recycled tweed and denim, and skirts made from tartan, overlaid with scribbly machine stitching. If clothes are a reflection of the personality of wearer, Joey's womenswear errs on the side of the tousled punk diva, while his outfits for men have a slightly more camp feel. In fact Elton John and KT Tunstall being clients gives a fairly accurate personality profile of his designs, More remodeller than pure designer, Joey nevertheless creates extraordinary clothes. Most importantly, he has pursued a very particular idea for years, and the wheel of fashion has turned towards the point that Joey D's been at for ages.
